Koen studied business economics in Rotterdam (Erasmus University) followed by a postgraduate degree in controlling in Amsterdam (Executive Master of Finance and Control). He started his career at Unilever as a management trainee in 1991. From 1996 onwards, he worked as a consultant and interim manager at Ernst & Young, among others. He is responsible for the consulting division at SIS Finance.
As a project manager and interim manager, he has worked on various assignments with a strong focus on performance and cost management, including:
From 2001 to 2008 he was a board member of the Dutch Association of Register Controllers and the Controllers Institute. Currently he is a member of the board of trustees of the controller postgraduate education in Rotterdam and editor of Managementsite.nl, a leading Internet magazine for managers and consultants. He is also a board member of Theater Kikker and the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. He is affiliated with ‘De Baak’ and teaches financial management for non-financial managers.
His book Make the Most of your Financial Manager (FT / Prentice Hall) was published in 2006, followed by the publication of another book in 2009, entitled 12 Cheerful Stories about Financial Management. His latest book (in Dutch) is Customer Profitabilty (Warden Press, 2017). He writes regularly for Het Financieele Dagblad.
